CEDAR RAPIDS – Brady Verlo, age 22, of West Branch, Iowa, has been charged with one count of receipt of child pornography. The charge is contained in an Indictment filed on January 28, 2014, in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.
The Indictment alleges that, in August 2013, Verlo received child pornography.
If convicted, Verlo faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and at least five years and up to life on supervised release following any imprisonment.
Verlo appeared today in federal court in Cedar Rapids and was held without bond. Verlo’s next appearance for a detention hearing is set for February 5, 2014.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, the Iowa City Police Department, and the West Branch Police Department.
SUBJECT IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY
I had a situation a few years ago where a relative of mine had his girlfriends grandson stay with them. The day after the kid was there they called me and asked if I would look at their computer as it wasn’t running right. I went and looked at it and found it had a virus and while looking at that I found some child porn on the computer. I asked him if it was his and he didn’t even know what it was. I asked if he wanted it after I explained it to him and he said HELL no. I deleted it and uninstalled the program, but if the wrong people had seen it he would have been in a lot of trouble. He kicked the kid out that night. It happens.
I don’t know this guy so I’m not commenting on him specifically.
I do know that those bit torrent sites can really not be the great deal that people may think. When they use your computer to store some of the torrent and it has child porn included, you are culpable. You can claim you didn’t do it, but using those sites to get cheap movies is accepting the consequences when it goes bad.
I hope that anyone caught in something like this goes for a jury trial and has a good lawyer. I think anyone who abuses and uses children needs to do time, but I do believe in the innocent until proven guilty part.
I’ll tell you what, if you ever wanted to destroy someone’s life find a way to get child porn on someone’s computer and turn them in. You know you would never believe them if they told you it wasn’t them who “received” it.
This is like witch burning now. No one will believe you if you say you’re not a pedo if you open up a bad e-mail. You’re a witch and must be burned.
