Truck driver arrested after striking road worker in Central Iowa

logo-iowa-state-patrolWARREN COUNTY – A Chicago truck driver struck and killed an Iowa road worker Thursday afternoon in Central Iowa.

According to a report, a semi-truck driven by 46 year-old Rubin Ward was approaching a construction area as he was northbound on Highway 65 about a mile north of Liberty Center.

Ward allegedly failed to stop for a construction zone flagger at the scene and then swerved to to avoid hitting stopped vehicles near the flagger. The flagger, Christopher J. Wheeler, 27, of Tama, Iowa was struck by the semi and was later pronounced dead.

Ward was arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal accident and was taken into custody in Warren County. The incident remains under investigation.

“The guy should have known that he was in the street and that he couldn’t stop a car so why a truck.”
I am certain that the Flagger knew he was in the street and that he couldn’t (physically) stop a car much less a truck. But the Flagger also knew that he was in a constuction zone; presumably correctly marked. In these zone the operator is required to adjust speed when required and to watch for workers and equipment close by.

Reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit is it? “Ward allegedly failed to stop for a construction zone flagger at the scene and then swerved to to avoid hitting stopped vehicles near the flagger. The flagger, Christopher J. Wheeler, 27, of Tama, Iowa was struck by the semi and was later pronounced dead.” The truck driver failed to stop; failed to manuever his rig to prevent striking the Flagger and fled the scene.

They know they have to slow down in construction zones. It is well posted. The driver is in real trouble over this one.

I can’t believe he left the scene after it happen, you are right LVS, he is in big trouble.
