New military policy aims to “deglamorize” use of alcohol

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Marine Corps Exchanges world-wide are changing the way alcohol is sold aboard Marine Corps installations following guidance by Gen. James F. Amos, the commandant of the Marine Corps.

The new policy limits the time alcohol can be purchased aboard bases from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Liquor will no longer be sold at Marine Marts adjacent to barracks, and the amount of floor space used for alcohol will be limited to no more than 10 percent of total retail selling floor.

Beginning Nov. 1, French Creek, Stone Bay and Marine Corps Air Station New River’s Marine Aircraft Group 29 Marine Marts will stop selling liquor, and store space dedicated to alcohol sales will be reduced at the Tarawa Terrace, Midway Park and Berkley Manor Marine Marts aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

The policy change emphasizes how serious the Marine Corps is taking irresponsible drinking, said Robin Schoolfield, the Resilience Education manager.

“Marines will be more conscious of how much they drink,” said Schoolfield. “They have to plan how much they want to drink ahead of time. They won’t be able to walk over in the middle of the night to buy alcohol.”

The policy change may cause some to realize how much they are drinking, Schoolfield added.

“The culture is changing toward more responsible, low-risk drinking,” said Schoolfield. “Between these policy changes and prevention efforts, I think a message is being sent across all ranks that we must have responsible drinking behavior.”

Policy change and education are some of the key factors with ensuring a culture change where alcohol use is deglamorized, said Schoolfield.

Removing some of the convenience of purchasing alcohol is one way to discourage excessive drinking, said Staff Sgt. Stephen Prince, a substance abuse control officer with Headquarters and Support Battalion aboard Camp Lejeune.

“It’s not the end-all-be-all, but there’s no question about it, it will have a positive impact on Marines,” said Prince.

The policy change comes in support of the Secretary of Navy’s 2lst Century Sailor and Marine initiative, as well as Marine Corps specific initiatives in the areas of behavioral health, sexual assault prevention and response and health promotion.

“The Marine Corps is taking the 21st Century Sailor and Marine initiative seriously, and this is our way to support the program,” said Carl Mencer, the director of retail with Marine Corps Community Services aboard Camp Lejeune.

I will talk to you anytime when I am home and off work. Get all your information together. Just so you know I served 4 years my dad served 10 in the guard and three uncles who served during the years of ww2 and Korean war. Right now I one nephew in the army and one other in the navy. My family has done its time. I also know if you get caught with drugs you get the boot. Excessive drinking severely punished. There are plenty of veterans who been punished for drugs and for excessive drinking after serving there time. Pete you want to talk to me just get a hold of me. Like I said you enjoy your freedom of speech. You just made me a little mad was all.

No my family contribution of service in the military alone gave you the freedom of speech. Everybody who served in the United States arm forces serves to keep this freedom and all other freedom provided to everybody in the United States. I will not answer anymore of your stuff Pete. My phone number is 6414209715. I am up till 9:30. If not I will be back from Houston on Friday. Take care Pete.

Meant good luck. Sorry Pete.

Pete you went over your head on this one. I believe in freedom of speech remember who fought to give you this. If you want to talk about this with me I will be home this weekend. I want start anything however go to the clear lake VFW and see what you get for a response. You lost a lot of votes from these comments and that is too bad. Good lick in your election. You are going to need it.

and you say you are over it… HA!

“Can’t even make one simple statement without being gang piled up on.
That to me tells me how NOT-FREE we really are.”
You ARE free to say just about anything you want…and you did. There does happen to be consequences for what you say and what you do. This seems to be where you tend not to want to own up to your past.
No issue taboo? How about a psychological evaluation for all running for office? Law enforcement has to go through it, why not you? We are all pretty sure how that would turn out at this point.

Peter,I kind of thought you said two posts ago that you had rested on this issue…but no, you have to go on and on. It is really getting old.

@peter L.-You are obsessing again.

I recall stories of military from my family and friends. Of those both living and dead. And those who by but the grace of God should have been dead. From all conflicts and theaters; Pacific, Europe, Viet Nam, Korea, and Iraq.

Even those who were 4-F.

I never tried to enter the Service, although the discipline would have done me good. Those who have served, have my respect. Why? Probably because they went and did something I could not. Which is ok, because from their stories, I realized if you were not an asset to the unit, you were a liability, no matter if it was in a foxhole, or in support.

That and more is why I believe in minimum standards. Security, and dependability. Ask anyone who has had to rely upon both qualities.

I’m sure that’s the the reason we let 4 Americans die in Bengazi. Hillary did her best but she couldn’t find any military to help because they were drinking too much….. O and watching that video which was the reason for it happening..

why does anyone think that the military could have changed the outcome of Bengazi? Our military isn’t a SWAT team. They are very good at what they do, but that usually take weeks or months of training to do that kind of a specific action.

USMC******UNCLE SAMS MISGUIDED CHILDREN

“I guess it’d be refreshing for a change if the Military would just admit:

A. Yes, We’re full of s***”
No, we are however full of patriotism and love of country.
“B. We make up the rules as we go along”
That would be our masters (civilians) who give us our orders.
“C. We’re hypocrites”
Please elaborate.
“D. Truth be told, we really just like to kill and blow things up.”
Yes there are a few who want to kill and blow things up; but we try to get rid of those types as they will get you killed. It is the soldier/sailor/airman that preys the hardest for peace for it is he who will utimately pay the dearest price.

“Wouldn’t that be refreshing if for once we’d hear the truth about it all?”
About what all?

there was a reason you weren’t inducted into the military. . .you just showed it.

So now you are building a military?

Yes, he is going to run the military out of the Peter central comand bunker right there in Clear Lake. Vegie burgers for all, go get-em guys!

Peter the only reason I read this thred is too too laugh at you. Oh now old Pete. Say something about how the alcohol is posing a threat to our troops conduct. Post your own arrest record. Or go and just call me a pig. Whatever. I told you who I was cause I am not scared of you. GOD BLESS ALL THE TROOPS AND THERE FAMILY! All of is appreciate what you all did and do! All of you be safe and thank you what you did or are doing! Be safe and dont even believe one word from a idiot like Peter.

Your freedom to make comments like this, is defended by those same servicemen.

@Allen-I am a huge supporter of our military and especially anyone who fought in any of the wars defending our country. However, I am realistic enough to know that not everyone who was in the service deserves automatic respect. There are bad apples in every branch of the service just like there are in any profession.

yep go defend your best friend Peter again

@steve-At least I have some friends. That is mor than someone like you can say. Unfortunately, I have never met Peter in person although I must say I respect his knowledge and his dedication for putting up with jerks like you.

Peter you talk so nuch about the harmful effects of alcohol but you have numerois drinking and driving and other alcohol related charges. Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black

That’s funny.

Peter, you said you hung around people whom came from alcoholic families and were also alcoholics themselves. So this is why you got in trouble with alcohol? Perhaps instead of blaming others, you should take some responsibility for your own actions, and quite blaming others? You are the one who chose to drink, and I am sure no one held you down and poured liquor down your throat. Get real.

Peter you say that you are trying to fix the military and the alcohol industry but how are you going to do this as a clear lake city council member?

This is not YOURS to critique. You didn’t even MAKE the cut but that is history and we all know how you feel about history.

Do you not know who controls the military? Do you not know that there are checks and balances for the police as well?

They are called standards. They are not the same all the time. You will get another lesson about standards in November.

It says “you have never served your country” if you are questioning the quality of our servicemen and women.

Laying down their lives VOLUNTARILY isn’t enough for you?

Hmmm, I wonder how much allowance you’d be willing to give a service member under the umbrella of “willingness to lay down their lives”?
I would put forth that they should be the only ones allowed to vote or at least have their vote count for twice as much as someone who hasn’t served. If you would have manned up and served your country, you would know how challenging it is. I will let you go back to being an armchair general now. Good luck.

By the same logic, I should be critical of the Navy SEALS. You didn’t get in. You also haven’t gotten over it. No need to worry any more though. You have such a problem with authority (bowing to no authority) you would not have made it through basic training.

“I find your thinking archaic and restrictive. History is history, there’s nothing we can do to change what was done…”
I find your reasoning non-linear, chaotic, and flippant. History is a tool to be used so mistakes are not repeated. To ignore it is foolhardy.
