Harkin Announces More than $350,000 for Iowa Highway Safety Programs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau has been awarded a total of $368,691 from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) National Highway Safety Administration to support highway safety programs. Harkin is a member of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds the DOT.

“The safety and well-being of our residents and out-of-state travelers relies largely on the safety of our highways,” said Harkin. “With the funding announced today, Iowa programs will work to educate motorists about proper highway safety and aid transportation officials in preventing injuries and saving lives.”

Details of the grants are below:

Occupant Protection Grant – $199,022 to encourage states to adopt and implement effective programs to reduce highway deaths and injuries resulting from individuals riding unrestrained or improperly restrained in motor vehicles.
State Traffic Safety Information System Improvements Grant – $169,668 to support vehicle passenger safety.
