Brian Burkett of Mason City sentenced to 25 years in prison

MASON CITY – A Mason City man who went on a rampage at two residences last month is going to prison.

Brian Lloyd Burkett, 33, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on June 26th by Judge Greg Rosenbladt on charge of felony B attempted murder.

On May 2nd, 2013 police responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence at the 100 block of 6th Street NW and arrested Burkett. He was charged with class B felony first degree burglary, class C felony willful injury, two counts of aggravated domestic assault and one count of serious assault after stabbing a woman at the residence. The assault charges, police said, stemmed from a separate incident at a residence at the 1300 block of South Delaware Avenue involving three victims.

Judge Rosenbladt threw out a number of charges related to Burkett’s actions on May 2nd, including assault causing bodily injury, willful injury causing serious injury, domestic abuse assault causing injury, and others.

It does seem like they throw as many charges as they can find a someone in the hopes that one will stick. Or maybe it is to get a larger sentence.

The police and prosecutors do too much “charge stacking”. It’s always 7 charges for essentially the same crime. It’s like double jeopardy times 4.

I agree and it’s hard for troglodytes to wrap their heads around the big picture sometimes, especially here.
