MASON CITY – The Mason City school board decided on Monday night to mandate masks if the illness rate of a building hits 7%.
Dave Versteeg, Mason City schools superintendent, reported Monday evening that “tonight the school board decided to have MCCSD staff & students wear masks indoors when the daily illness rate of a building hits 7% and until it falls below 5% starting Mon(day) the 27th.”
Leading up to the decision, the board had requested input from the community.
The agenda item on masking was made possible after a federal judge threw out the state’s prohibition of mask mandates.

“I feel masks should be required for safety and wellbeing when common-sense issues are known. My 2 boys whom are in attendance, have serious asthma and allergies issues. With that being known, their safety, which includes their own (personal) health wellbeing; is in fact the MCCSD’s liability when they are placed in their buildings care.
I do not send my children to school to be harmed and for a better word; abused. IT IS abuse to knowingly and continually put unhealthy/communicable bodies in rooms with healthy/well(un-ill) bodies. So much could be prevented and be so less scary, if only proper hand-washing and caretaking was consistently taking place. But that is unrealistic for so many reasons within this pop. as a whole.
My boys deserve the right to be able to breathe freely, with their right to wear a mask if needed or wanted(a sole decision for any reason foreseen or unforeseen). But, also, they should also have the choice to remove their mask if their breathing/allergy issues are making their daily waking hours overwhelming and unmanageable with their mask on without worry.
My children and all children need and have the right to be cared for without neglectful and lazy staffing issues being ignored.”

Masks need to be a choice. All the “science” behind it is government funded. Any evidence based research that has taken place has concluded that masks do little to nothing. Look it up, prove me wrong. Facts don’t lie, but doctors and scientists paid by the government do! If you want to live where you have been stripped of your decision making freedoms, California and New York currently has declining populations. I’m sure they would love to have your compliance.

When I was in school you were sent home if you were not wearing a belt. No parents got upset. So being told what to do at school is nothing new.
Where does the 7%/5% come from? It seems either arbitrarily or purposefully low.
That means in a classroom of 18, only one child can be sick (for any reason). To go back to no masks, that means ZERO sick kids. In a building of 150 kids, 11 gone means masks until only 7 or less are absent. I suspect this threshold is below pre-COVID numbers.
How confusing for the kids!! So they don’t know from day to day of they have to wear one or not?? It should be up to individual families, period.
