Worked for the railroad for 6 years, there can be dozens of reasons for a train to derail. The railroad will pay for any damages to the street but the city is responsible for the crossings. The road goes through the rr’s property, not the other way around, if citizens want to get over the tracks the city needs to pay for the crossing.

The Carolina crossing is so rough. You don’t dare go very fast over the tracks. It seems it wasn’t that long ago those crossings were all redone. Now they are sunk into the ground. Don’t know if that had anything to do with the derailment though.

i hope the city of mason city dos not do the repairs, the derail enough already
