WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump raised the idea that humans might be well-served injecting a disinfectant into their bodies to defeat the nasty coronavirus, but the maker of a popular anti-germ product quickly dispelled that idea.
The maker of the popular household cleaner and disinfectant Lysol – Reckitt Benckiser – released a public statement on the “improper use of disinfectants” shortly after President Donald Trump gave a speech Thursday, April 24, 2020, to millions of Americans about the fight to solve or cure the coronavirus and its devastating effect on thousands of Americans. Trump uttered a phrase in the press conference, saying, “and then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute, and is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning.”
Trump repeatedly looked to his right during his delivery of the remarks at Dr. Deborah Birx for affirmation, but she sat stoically in her seat and barely moved, nor said anything.
Some feared that gullible Americans who blindly follow the words and advice of leaders like President Trump might actually give this “treatment” a try, and end up killing or maiming themselves in the process.
Reckitt Benckiser dutifully responded to the President’s speculation on the use of disinfectant inside the human body, saying “Due to recent speculation and social media activity, RB (the makers of Lysol and Dettol) has been asked whether internal administration of disinfectants may be appropriate for investigation or use as a treatment for coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). As a global leader in health and hygiene products, we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route). Trump’s arch-rival, Hillary Clinton, fired at the President, saying, “Please don’t poison yourself because Donald Trump thinks it could be a good idea.”
Respected journalist Dan Rather sounded off, saying “The world would be laughing at us, if it wasn’t for the weeping.”
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany defended the President by blaming the press, saying, “Leave it to the media to irresponsibly take President Trump out of context and run with negative headlines.”
