FAYETTE COUNTY, IOWA – Four Iowans were critically hurt this weekend when a deer ran onto a highway and rammed a motorcycle, leading to a collision.
On September 16, 2017 at 7:46 PM, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a motorcycle accident with injuries on Highway 18 approximately 2 miles west of West Union, Iowa. An investigation determined that a group of motorcycles was travelling westbound on Highway 18 when a deer entered the roadway from the left and ran into the front tire of a 2003 Harley Davidson operated by Chad Lee Brickman, age 38 from Waterloo and a passenger April Ann Washburn, age 36 from Waterloo. The impact from the deer caused the motorcycle to veer into the path of a 2013 Harley Davidson operated by Benjamin Joseph Tickal, age 35 from Waterloo and a passenger, Katherine Anne Tickal age 35 from Waterloo. Both drivers and passengers were thrown from the motorcycles and sustained critical injuries. All persons were transported to Palmer Hospital in West Union. Brickman and Washburn were later airlifted to Covenant and Allen Hospital in Waterloo.
There was an estimated $7,500 damage to both motorcycles.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, West Union Police Dept. , Tri State Ambulance, Fayette Ambulance and West Union Fire Dept.
