SPIRIT LAKE, IOWA – A driver attempted to flee police today in Spirit Lake, Iowa, leading him to fatally crash his pickup into a lake.
On Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at approximately 12:30am, Spirit Lake Police initiated a traffic stop on a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup. The driver of the pickup did attempt to elude officers and a short pursuit ensued. Officers lost contact with the vehicle. A few minutes later, the Ford pickup was located after it had been involved in a traffic accident. The accident resulted in the pickup traveling through a residential yard, colliding with a small utility shed and then came to rest in East Okoboji Lake. The driver of the vehicle was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare where he was pronounced deceased.
Police say the name of the driver is being withheld pending family notification.
This incident is currently under investigation. Further details will be released at a later time.
