UPDATE: Woman mauled, two others bitten by Jack Russell Terriers in rural Mason City

Screen Shot 2015-04-07 at 10.32.03 PMMASON CITY – A woman was knocked to the ground and mauled by three Jack Russell Terriers Monday afternoon in a rural Mason City neighborhood, and two others were also bitten before one dog was shot dead.

According to the Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office, a report was called in at about 1:10 PM Monday of a woman who had been inured after a dog attack in the Winnebago Heights area of Mason City (the 15500 block of North Street). The victim was identified as 29-year-old Stefanie Murray. She had been standing outside her home when the three Jack Russell Terriers knocked her down and bit her numerous times about the face, arm and leg. The dogs belong to Logan Craig and Mark and Joyce Lansaw, all of Mason City.

Murray was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment.

Two other persons were bitten: 63-year-old Steven Juhl and 29-year-old Jennifer Coolidge. Neither sought medical treatment.

During the incident, one of the dogs was shot and killed after “coming after the victims multiple times”, the Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office said. They did not specify who shot the dog. The deceased dog’s body was transported to Iowa City for rabies tests. The two other dogs have been quarantined to the owner’s residence for 10 days, pursuant to local ordinance.

The incident remains under investigation.

These dogs are not normally aggressive, but they need lots of exercise and stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. There are too many people in this world who have animals, leave them kenneled or chained up 24-7 and don’t interact with them at all, that is abuse also. If you have a pet, don’t chain them, how cruel is that. a properly trained and loved animal don’t need a chain to stay in his yard, if he knows his owner will walk and play with him daily. Most don’t deserve a pet.

AMEN!

That’s a mean looking Jack, I didn’t think that those dogs were that vicious.

They’re not!

Don’t understand why they stupid F’n people can’t tie up their dogs.I’m sure these idiots don’t have them licensed or there rabies shots. It pisses me off when there idiots can’t go out and buy ($10.00) a proper cable or dog chain to keep them in their yard.

I don’t understand why stupid F’ people cant train their dog properly! Chaining a dog is not the answer.

Even if the dogs are trained their is no reason why they are not tied up.

I’m betting she was teasing the dogs. Here we go again. An animal does not attack unless it’s provoked or trained to. So here is another innocent animal probably going to be put down. If I was the owners I would check and see if anyone in the neighborhood has a security camera.

@Mc Citizen-I will tale exception to you comment that dogs will not attack without a reason. I have seen lots of dogs that will attack if you are just walking by. Our neighbor has a pit bull that breaks the rope or gets out the door because the idiot owner leaves it open. The dog has attacked the mailman and gone after other people for no reason other than they happened to be there. Some dogs have attacking bred into them and you never know when the will attack. Keep them on a leash. Or fenced.

Every time I have been attacked and bitten by dogs on my route, I did not aggravate the dog in any way, I even give them dog treats and they still bite and attack. That is when I report them. The owners story is always the same. (He or she has never done that before.) That is bull crap, It happens every time I am here. It gets old knowing you have to deliver to a house where you are going to have to fend off a dog.

Well you know the saying , if your dog don’t like someone than you probably shouldn’t either. Dogs know. John, maybe they can sense your fear. I believe there is more to this story. I bet the girls can get to the. Bottom of all this. Stephanie Murray hmm sounds familiar.

so MC, what you are saying is that I should beat the dog over the head to show him or her I am not afraid of them? That doesn’t make sense to me.

John’ I would answer that but its so ridiculously silly!

Dogs don’t have attacking bred into them. None do. Dogs are trained by the owners to attack OR they were never properly trained to begin with LVS. Some dogs are protective of their home/owners. Maybe she was teasing them and maybe it has been going on for awhile. I think before a dog is put down they need to investigate the owner and the subjects of all incidents. Some dogs react to fear in many ways. Its not fair to these animals.

@MC Citizen-I have a dog that I love very much. He is the sweetest most lovable dog you have ever seen as long as someone from my family is there. When we are not there you do not dare come into our home as he is very protective and will get aggressive very fast. We keep him on a leash every time we have him outside. He has never been hit, kicked or otherwise mistreated but he would attack if you were to come in our home unannounced.
