CHARLES CITY – Police in Charles City are being kept on their toes with calls to a low-income apartment complex that some say is flooded with people from big cities.

Reports from police indicate – over the course of the last several years – frequent calls for service to the Morningside Apartments at the 2100 block of Clarkview Drive. Many times the types of calls are for wanted individuals, fights, yelling, screaming, domestic incidents, loud music and general disturbances.

Many long-time Charles City residents are suspicious of the tenants, saying a large portion of them are from big cities like Detroit and Chicago. Some say inner-city folks are recruited from these metro areas to come to Charles City, and they bring their big-city problems with them.

One Charles City resident told NIT that “it’s bad. And they (the residents) don’t just cause problems out there (at the apartment complex). They are always at the Dollar General Store and the laundromat. They are loud and obnoxious and make it hard to shop.”

Others say that more hard-core criminals have moved to Charles City and are committing serious crimes such as burglary and assault.

One day last week typified the types of calls police deal with at the low-income apartments on Clarkview Drive.

On July 27 at 1:38 AM, Charles City police officers went to the Morningside Apartments for a report that children were left home alone. Police claimed that they determined that an adult “was present and everything was OK.”  No action was taken.

Soon thereafter, officers were called back to the location at 2:21 AM for a report of a fight. Police spoke to several subjects who denied a fight had taken place.

Seventeen minutes later, at 2:38 AM, officers were called to return, on a report of a fight. Police said that incident remains under investigation.

Once again that morning at 3:52 AM, police officers were needed at the apartments on a report of “subjects being loud.” Police advised the person to “keep it down”.

Yet again, seventeen minutes later at 4:09 AM, police came back on a report of loud music. Police advised the residents there to “turn it down”.

According to the city of Charles City’s website, families or “single pregant women, who have good rental histories, no serious criminal records, and do not owe any money to any housing agency are welcome to apply” to live at the Morningside Apartments. Rents top out at $403.00 for the two-bedroom units and $500.00 for the three-bedroom units, of which there are 8 units and 7 units, respectively.

The only solution for this problem is…C.O.P. Program. It stands for community oriented policing. It works! Hit your city council meetings, and talk to your P.D. Community relations officer. The program works , good luck!

Sure, but lets let in some more low income people who can’t speak the language.

They can speak English….It happens to be that they speak Ebonics… I mean no disrespect, but it is very hard to understand the urban black language. They have created the language themselves. Some schools have banned the use of Ebonics..

To say that North Iowa has become a Mecca for inner-city dwellers is an understatement.

Hate to break it to you, but North Iowa isn’t a mecca for much of anything.

Who in their right mind would recruit people like this to come and sponge of the citizens of Charles City. Another problem with them is that they will also come to Mason City to sponge and populate, at the tax payers expense.

Been to Wal-Mart on a Saturday lately? Little Mexico.

Years ago, Chicago had a neighborhood called Uptown.

It was filled with hicks and hillbillies from Iowa, Chicagoans would drive by and sneer at them–“there goes the neighborhood”!

Dude looks white to me.
