ST. LOUIS — Behind a stifling defensive effort and a milestone performance from its veteran core, the No. 2-seed Iowa State Cyclones dismantled the Kentucky Wildcats 82–63 on Sunday at the Enterprise Center to advance to the Sweet 16.

The victory marks a significant turning point for the program, which had previously fallen to Kentucky in both 1992 and 2012. With the win, head coach T.J. Otzelberger tied Johnny Orr for the most neutral-site victories in school history (24) and became the quickest coach in Iowa State history to reach 100 career wins.

The Cyclones’ defense, ranked fifth nationally in adjusted efficiency, set the tone early. By holding the Wildcats to just 63 points, Iowa State extended an elite streak of holding 17 consecutive opponents below their season scoring average.

Offensively, the Cyclones were led by their standout duo of Milan Momcilovic and Joshua Jefferson. Momcilovic, the program’s single-season record holder for three-pointers, entered the game averaging a team-high 17.1 points per game. He was complemented by Jefferson, the program’s first consensus All-American since 2016, who provided the interior presence necessary to pull away in the second half.

Tamin Lipsey

Junior point guard Tamin Lipsey anchored the backcourt, utilizing his veteran experience to navigate Kentucky’s pressure. Lipsey, the school’s all-time steals leader with 308, became one of only five players in Iowa State history to compete in four different NCAA Tournaments.

This win brings the Cyclones to 101 victories over the last four seasons—the winningest four-year stretch in program history. Iowa State now heads to the regional semifinals for the third time in the last five years under Otzelberger’s leadership.
