Richard D. Block, 90, of Mason City, formerly of Thompson, Iowa, passed away on January 4, 2026 at IOOF Home in Mason City surrounded by his family.

Funeral services for Richard will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center, IA, with Pastor Sue Shike officiating. Military Honors will be performed by the Buffalo Center American Legion.

A visitation for Richard will be held on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until the start of the service at 11:00 A.M. at the church.

Interment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery.

If you are unable to attend the service, Richard’s funeral will be livestreamed on his obituary page under the “tribute wall” tab on the Schott Funeral Home website.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center or the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Richard Duane Block was born on June 22, 1935 in Forest City, Iowa, the son of Arthur E. And Judith A. (Mannes) Block. He attended school in Thompson graduating in 1953. Richard enlisted in the United States Army, serving from 1954-1956. Richard married Darlene M. Thompson on March 1, 1958.

Richard was a life-long farmer north of Thompson until his retirement at age 72. He enjoyed his garden, mowing, camping with family and friends, along with 40 years wintering in Texas. He was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, and later at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. Richard was known for his faith and love of family and enjoyed the times he spent with them.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Darlene. Richard is survived by his daughters, Sherryl (Dan) Wiese, Carolyn Block and Linda (David) Stine; grandchildren, Phil (Molly) Wiese, Sarah (Andrew) Craig, Katie Wiese, Jason (Hannah) Stine and Kelsey Stine; great grandchildren, Calvin Wiese, Bennett Wiese, Declan Craig, and baby girl Stine due in March; sister, Darlene Askvig; brother and sisters-in-law, Marilyn Balvance, Janet (Maynard) Spitzack, and Susan Thompson; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers-in-law, Dick Askvig, Kenneth Balvance, Royce Thompson; and nephew, Dan Askvig.
