Person dies after swimming in Iowa lake from infection of Naegleria fowleri

LAKE OF THREE FIRES, TAYLOR COUNTY, IOWA – A person has died after swimming in an Iowa lake from infection of Naegleria fowleri, a so-called brain-eating amoeba.

Effective since July 8, the beach at Lake of Three Fires in Taylor County has been closed for swimming, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. The closure is a precautionary response to a confirmed infection of Naegleria fowleri in a Missouri resident with recent potential exposure while swimming at the beach at Lake of Three Fires State Park. The person has reportedly died this week from the infection.

As many as 11 state-owned Iowa beaches are currently closed due to high levels of bacteria that could cause sickness in people who are in the waters.
