Gerald “Jerry” Richard Jones, the son of Richard and Charlabelle (Robinson) Jones, was born September 17, 1944 in Oelwein, Iowa. He grew up in rural Volga, Iowa, attended Volga school through the 11th grade and graduated from Central High School in Elkader, Iowa with the class of 1962. Sadly, both his parents died in 1961 when Jerry was just 16 years old and his brother
George a couple of years younger. They were then raised by their grandparents.
Jerry attended Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska for auto mechanics. After graduating he worked as a mechanic at Stebor Motors in Cedar Rapids until 1966. It was while working and living in Cedar Rapids that he met Beverly, and they married in 1967. In 1966 he served six months of active duty in the Iowa National Guard.
Jerry then returned home to Volga to farm cattle on his parents’ farm and drove gravel truck for a couple of years. From 1968 to 1970 Jerry ran the motor grader for the county. In 1970 the family farm was sold to pay off his parents outstanding debts and that is when he and his family moved to Rudd, Iowa.
Jerry drove truck for H & M Transport from 1970 until the company closed in 1990. He hauled gasoline, anhydrous ammonia, propane and other flammables. Soon after that Jerry bought his own semi-truck and worked for himself and was still trucking in the Spring of 2025.
Jerry has always been a “gear head”. He liked to tinker around in his garage on numerous projects. He collected vintage English motorcycles, loved to ride his Harley, went to Sturgis every other year, enjoyed fishing (especially on his annual trip to Black Duck Lake and Cass Lake with his brother, George), deer hunting, camping, ice fishing and tending to his vegetable garden. Jerry was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church.
Living family members include his three daughters: Christa (Randy) Strait of Mason City, Kaye (Rick) Jarrett of Altoona and Karen (Jason) Parcher of Floyd; step-daughter, Megan (Colin) Quinn of Mason City; six grandchildren: John Strait (Tanya Kramer), Tyler (Juliana) Strait, Jacob (Sara) Strait, Ben (Halie) Parcher, Sarah Parcher and William Jarrett; three great-grandchildren: Brea Strait, Forrest Strait and Lydia Parcher; brother, George (Mary) Jones of McGregor; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; his parents; and his grandparents.
