Iowa woman accused of torturing a dog

This Iowa woman is accused of binding a dog's paws, wrapping a cord around its neck and stuffing it into a suitcase, and she was jailed and awarded a public defender.

DES MOINES – This Iowa woman is accused of binding a dog’s paws, wrapping a cord around its neck and stuffing it into a suitcase, and she was jailed and awarded a public defender.

Kyra Marie Johnson (pictured at top), age 26 of West Des Moines, is the accused, and was held in the Polk county jail on $5,000 cash bond this week. She faces charges of:

  • ANIMAL TORTURE – 1ST OFFENSE – AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOR

  • ANIMAL NEGLECT W/SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH – AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOR

Her alleged crimes were committed on January 22, 2025, and she was formally charged by the Polk county attorney this month. Johnson posted bond via American Cash Bonds and was released from jail on December 12. She awaits a December 22 court date.

According to news reports, authorities found a neglected dog on Johnson’s property in Des Moines and then a suitcase containing the body of the deceased dog in a shed there. She allegedly had tortured the animal in some fashion, is its neck and paws were bound.  The neglected dog was reportedly rescued.
