MASON CITY – A Rockwell man crossing a street in downtown Mason City was struck by a transit bus Tuesday afternoon, and took an ambulance to the hospital.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, a pedestrian versus bus accident took place on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. At 2:30 PM that afternoon, at a crosswalk at 220 N. Washington Avenue, a 2017 transit bus driven by 79-year-old Ralph Madison of Mason City was facing westbound at 3rd Street NW and North Washington Avenue. A pedestrian, 68-year-old Francis James Hanig of Rockwell, was walking in the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection. The transit bus turned southbound and failed to yield to the pedestrian, and struck him.
