STANLEY, IOWA – This Jeep Cherokee met an unfortunate end to its useful life in a recent crash into a Northern Iowa creek, before a passerby spotted it mangled, battered, and awash in booze, and cops say the driver – on probation in a felony burglary and criminal mischief case, had fled the scene for medical treatment.

On September 19, 2025, at approximately 7:43 PM, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a vehicle in the ditch at a t-intersection at K Avenue and 35th Street near Stanley, Iowa. Deputies responded and observed a 2017 Jeep Cherokee located in the creek on the east side ditch.

After further investigation, it was discovered that 40-year-old Nathan Lee Squire of Baxter, Iowa, lost control of his vehicle and entered the ditch, where it rolled multiple times. The Jeep landed in the creek.

Police claim the original accident occurred at approximately 5:30 PM that evening, and was not reported until a passerby located the vehicle at 7:43 PM.

It was discovered that Nathan Lee Squire was taken to an area hospital by family and sustained only minor injuries from this accident.

Also as a result of the police investigation, Squire He was cited for:

  • Open Container – Driver (21 years +)

  • Failure to Maintain Control

Records show Squire was guilty of the open container citation and the failure to maintain control citation, costing him $354.00 and $210.25, respectively.

Records show earlier in 2025, Squire was given a sweet deal from an Iowa judge in a case in which Squire was charged with felony burglary and criminal mischief. Squire was put on probation for two years for burglary and the mischief charge was dismissed, but he had to pay Iowa courts $5421.30.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Stanley Fire Department and Birchard Fab and Repair.
