Virl B. Deal, age 101, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. Virl was born on September 27, 1924, in New Virginia, Iowa, to Thurlow and Marie (Fisher) Deal. Virl was a proud World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army. He was a longtime barber in St. Ansgar and cherished the relationships he built over the years. In his spare time, Virl enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and playing cards. He also liked a good road trip, going out to eat, bowling, and dancing. Most of all, Virl’s two greatest joys were spending time with his family and flying his own home-built airplane.
Virl is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children, Lorraine (Steve) Beland, Bud (Shari) Deal, and Nancy (Kurt) Mayer; grandchildren, April (Mario), Joe (Kim), Andy (Melinda), Rob (Sarah), Phillip (Whitney), Donnie (Amanda), Toleka, Nathan, Noah, Heather (Jason), BJ, Jason (Melissa), Eric, and Pete (Jessica); 31 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley Wenger, and Cleo Piltingsrud; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Betty in 1995; infant sons; daughter, Marie Juenger; son-in-law, Mo Juenger; granddaughter, Elena; three brothers; and one sister.
The funeral service for Virl will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at St. Ansgar United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar. The visitation will take place from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Hoff Celebrations – Schroeder Chapel in St. Ansgar and will continue for one hour prior to the service at church on Tuesday. Interment will be in the Carpenter-Newburg Township Cemetery in rural Carpenter. Hoff Celebrations – Schroeder Chapel of St. Ansgar is assisting the family with arrangements.
