Northern Iowa driver strikes bicyclist, causes serious injuries and airlift

BUCHANAN COUNTY - A bicyclist was seriously hurt when a Northern Iowa driver struck him with his pickup truck.

BUCHANAN COUNTY – A bicyclist was seriously hurt when a Northern Iowa driver struck him with his pickup truck.

On Tuesday, March 05, 2024 at approximately 2:10 pm, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 report of a vehicle versus bicyclist accident in the 1300 block Fairbank-Amish Blvd. According to the investigation, a 2007 Ford F250 operated by 51-year-old Jason Bents of Oelwein, was traveling southbound on Fairbank-Amish Blvd and struck a bicyclist along the edge of the roadway, that was also traveling southbound.

The bicyclist, identified as 65-year-old Michael Flaucher of Independence, was airlifted from the scene to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City with serious injuries.

Bents and a passenger in his vehicle were not injured.

The accident remains under investigation at this time.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Fairbank Fire Department, Fairbank Ambulance and LifeGuard Air Ambulance.
