
WEST UNION, IOWA – A Northern Iowa man out riding his bicycle was struck and killed by a man driving a Chrysler Town & Country van on a remote, rural road.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the a van versus bicycle collision was reported on June 29, 2025, in Fayette county, Iowa. At about 10:14 AM that morning, on Juniper Road not far from Kitty Road, a 2016 Chrysler Town & Country van driven by 72-year-old Steven Steinberg of Ossian, Iowa, was traveling southbound on Juniper Road. The van struck a bicyclist that was also traveling southbound at that location.
As a result of the collision, the bicyclist, 76-year-old Ronald Saboe of West Union, Iowa, was killed, and pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to an obituary, Ron Saboe graduated from North High School in 1967 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education from Iowa State University in 1974. He also attended St. Paul Vocational Technical School, where he studied clock and watchmaking. In 1981, he was awarded a GIA diamond scholarship from the Jewelers of America. On November 5, 1983, Ron was united in marriage to Constance “Connie” Rominger at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. Two sons were born to this union, Michael and Jeff. In 1983, Ron and Connie purchased Saboe Jewelry in West Union, Iowa’s oldest jewelry store, which they operated together for many years. Ron was a skilled watchmaker and a devoted business owner.
Police said the crash remains under investigation.
