Shirley Young, age 93 of Emmetsburg, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023 at the Palo Alto County Health System. Private services will be held at a later date.
Shirley Young was born in Algona on January 8, 1930, to Leo and Anna (Arndorfer) Miller. She graduated from Algona High School in 1946. She married the love of her life, Dixon Young on April 6, 1948, at St. Benedict. She passed away on December 18, 2023, in Emmetsburg.
Dick and Shirley farmed near Algona most of their lives. Shirley was the long-time bookkeeper/office manager at KEMCO Tires. Dick and Shirley loved fishing and took many fishing trips together over the years. They were also sports fans, especially wrestling. They attended many school activities in support of their children and grandchildren. Shirley enjoyed music and taught herself to play the piano and accordion by ear. She had a green thumb and was an avid gardener, maintaining a spot at the community garden well into her 80s. She and Dick raised livestock and her grandchildren remember fondly all the Sunday dinners of fried chicken and homemade bread on the farm while they were growing up. Shirley excelled at math and was quick to learn technology. Her grandchildren loved playing Nintendo with her. Dick and Shirley also stocked a farm pond where the family enjoyed many days fishing together.
Shirley was a member of St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Algona until moving to Emmetsburg in 2010. During her later years, Shirley prayed the rosary several times daily. She died shortly after the loss of her daughter Renee. She is survived by her children Clint (Sue) Young and Darrick (Karen) Young of Emmetsburg, and Kris (Al) Zimmerman of Whittemore; grandchildren Mikal, Dakotah, Colton and Autumn Young, JaDee Gloede, Jenny Douville, Jamey Cassels, Louisa Montague, Chyan Schiek, Dale and Dru Zimmerman and spouses; many great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and her sister Dianna Johnson of Algona. She was preceded in death by her husband Dick, her daughter Renee (Ron) Rochleau,, brother Chris Miller, and sisters Bette Hoover and Virginia Schenck.
