IOWA CITY – Police have arrested an Iowa man in a case where a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted as she walked past a bar.

At 2:09 AM on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, Iowa City Police responded to a report of a sexual assault. The victim reported being attacked by a man while walking near the alley of the 200 block of South Van Buren Street near the busy downtown area approximately half an hour earlier.

The incident remained under investigation until this week, when police announced they arrested 25-year-old Anthony Cotner, Jr. (pictured above in a jail photo) of Cedar Rapids. He now faces one count of felony 2nd degree sexual abuse.

Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and exercise caution when walking, particularly at night.
