Donald “Roundy/Rounder” Neil Helmers was born on July 16, 1928 in rural Emmet County, Iowa to Neil and Susie (Burt) Helmers. He passed away on May 11, 2023 surrounded by his family at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville at the age of 94 years.
Roundy worked in construction for many years. He also owned several bars/restaurants. He was married to Leora Baker, with whom he had three children: Roxann, Tom, and Jon. This marriage was later dissolved. Roundy was well known for his quick wit, and helpfulness. He was always willing to help and stick up for those in need.
The most important thing to Roundy was his family. He looked up to and adored his parents. He made many great memories with the time he spent with his nephews. They learned from him to work hard, so that they could later play hard.
Don is survived by his children Roxann Fjetland of Clear Lake and Tom (Juanita) Helmers of Kansas City, MO; his grandchildren Brandon Fjetland, Holly (Kent) Brcka, Blair Fjetland, Blain (Hollie) Fjetland all of Clear Lake, Neil (Kasie) Helmers, and Tim Helmers all of Kansas City, MO. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Riley and Blake Fjetland; Olivia, Alex, and Nick Brcka; Devon, Kyra, Kami, and Kali Helmers; Kynasin, Griffin, Keeley, Barrett, and Lincoln Helmers. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Deb Johnson, Dennis (Connie) Helmers, Michael (Sharon) Helmers, Alan Helmers (Charlene), Gary Helmers (Denise), Terry (Becky) Helmers, Sandi (David) Henton, and Jim Koenecke (Cheryl).
Don is preceded in death by his parents, his son Jon Helmers, his son-in-law Lon Fjeland, his siblings Bob (Leanna) Helmers, DonnaJean (Orville) Koenecke.
