BURLINGTON – Bullets fired from a nearby highway struck the home of sleeping Iowans, piecing their home and landing on the bed they were sleeping in.

Burlington Police officers were sent to the 1500-block of Lucas Avenue on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 4:45 AM, after a homeowner reported their house had been struck by a projectile after hearing 4-5 gunshots in the vicinity. The residents told officers they had located a bullet hole and projectile inside their home. The bullet broke a window on the second story of the home and continued through a closet and into an adjoining bedroom, coming to rest on top of the bed the homeowners were sleeping in.

Based on the trajectory of the bullet’s path, officers were able to establish a possible area the bullet was fired from. Officers began canvassing the area, and located seven 9mm shell casings in the eastbound lanes of Highway 34. The distance between the shell casings suggests someone was shooting from a moving car while traveling east on Highway 34.

There were no injuries or other property damage reported.
