FORT DODGE – A tragedy was averted when police were able to talk down a man with a gun in Fort Dodge who threatened to delete himself.

On the morning of April 20, 2023, approximately 8:36 AM, the Webster County Telecommunications Center received a call stating that a male was threatening to harm himself and he was mobile in a vehicle somewhere in the Fort Dodge area. The information provided at the time indicated the male was likely armed with a firearm.

Officers checked multiple locations in an attempt to locate the male and his vehicle. Eventually officers discovered the male in his vehicle parked inside Snell Crawford Park. Officers set up a perimeter to ensure safety for the male as well as the community.

The male communicated with officers and dispatch via telephone for an extended period of time. After approximately two and a half hours, the male exited his vehicle without incident. The male was transported to Unity Point‐Trinity Regional Medical Center. No injuries were reported, and a firearm was recovered.

The Fort Dodge Police Department was assisted on scene by the Iowa State Patrol, the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, and the Fort Dodge Fire Department.
