Illinois man killed in wrong-way collision in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS – An Illinois man was killed in a wrong-way collision Sunday in Cedar Rapids.

On Sunday, March 7, 2021 at 2:05 a.m. Cedar Rapids Police officers responding to another incident came upon a two-vehicle accident with injuries on northbound U.S. Interstate 380 north of the 7th Street NE exit.

Officers located a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 with four occupants that had been struck by a 2019 Ford F-150 with one occupant. A passenger in the Suburban was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two other occupants were transported by Area Ambulance Service with serious injuries. The driver of the truck was transported with non-life threatening injuries.

One of rear passengers of the Suburban was ambulatory at the scene and later went to the hospital by private vehicle. The three other occupants of the Suburban required extrication by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

The driver of the Ford F-150 has been identified as Tyler S. Lee, DOB/10-21-1986, age 34, of Rockton, Illinois.

The driver of the Suburban has been identified as Rylee Brooke Wallingford, DOB/02-12-2001, age 20, of Cedar Rapids. Wallingford remains hospitalized with serious injuries at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The front seat passenger in the Suburban who died at the scene has been identified as David Phuong Nguyen, DOB/11-04-1997, age 23, of Cedar Rapids.
The rear passengers in the Suburban have been identified as Benjamin Phillip Brecht, DOB/03-06-1998, age 23, of Cedar Rapids and Skyler McDowell, DOB/07-13-1998, age 22, of Cedar Rapids.

Based on preliminary information, the driver of the Ford F-150 was traveling south in the northbound lanes of U.S. Interstate 380 and struck the Suburban. There was significant intrusion into the driver and passenger compartments of both vehicles.

There is an ongoing investigation. No further information is available at this time.
