Winless season ends Iowa State tennis coach’s job

AMES – Iowa State women’s tennis coach Armando Espinosa’s contract will not be extended ending his 11-year term with the Cyclones. Senior Associate Athletics Director Dr. Calli Sanders made the announcement Tuesday.

“Armando has been a loyal member of our athletics program for many years and we are grateful for his efforts as head coach this last decade,” said Sanders. “Unfortunately, we just haven’t seen the competitive progress in our tennis program that we expected and that our student-athletes deserve. We recently opened a brand new practice center dedicated to our program and really felt that would inject some new life into the program, but that hasn’t materialized. The Big 12 Conference is a very challenging league, but going winless this year was below everyone’s expectations.”

Espinosa’s 10-year mark as head coach was 96-144, including a 12-84 mark in the Big 12. He was an assistant for one year prior to promotion to head coach. His 96 wins are the most in school history, but this year’s team was 9-17 overall and winless in nine conference duals.

“We appreciate his dedication and efforts on behalf of our program,” Sanders said. “A national search for his replacement will begin immediately.”

Espinosa’s contract would have expired on June 30, 2018.
