Bank of America closing Mason City branch due to stale business climate

MASON CITY – A downtown Mason City bank is closing its doors.

In a letter to customers, Bank of America says it is closing its branch located at 25 West State Street.

NIT called the bank and spoke to a bank employee, Alicia. When asked why the bank is closing, she said she was told “Mason City just isn’t growing or adding any new business here.”

There appear to be only 7 Bank of America locations in the entire state of Iowa. The other 6 locations are all in the Des Moines metro area.

The bank closes August 23, 2016, it claims, in a letter to customers.

There has been speculation that the city may use the Bank of America building/property for its planned “Renaissance” project which involves a hockey arena right next door in the former JC Penney store. A number of calls to point-man its council member Alex Kuhn have not been returned, seeking comment on this matter and others.

By far the worst bank downtown, super annoying going in there, super annoying policies, ridiculous fees, never once did I like this bank. People I know who bank there has said it has gone to crap in the last few years. They shut down the drive thru and lied to all the customers about the reason they shut it down. If these quotes are from the annoying lady who greets you at the door, well screw her, glad she’s out of job!

I hope Wells Fargo fka Norwest fka First National Bank is not next. No more businesses can leave town. Period.

Started going down hill with each acquisition (or takeover) since it was United Home Bank. I was at ISU going to college down to my last $50.00 in my account and I get a letter from Boatman’s Bank saying they were going to charge me a service fee as my account was under their minimum. I explained in a month I would be out of college for the summer and had a job lined up and would be putting money back in. Didn’t matter and the service fees ate up the rest of my balance. Even my parents who banked there since the 1960s gave up on them a number of years ago. “Big City” ideas don’t cut it in small town America. Feel sorry for the employees losing their jobs because of poor decisions of management that probably has never set foot in Mason City.

They pestered the heck out of our business to try to get our accounts. No way would we leave our hometown bank.

The Credit Unions have the local business and should.

Well Dr Neilsen and I had an account there a very large check of ours was deposited in the wrong account.. They verbally apologized and we received a bill for many overdrafts.. THEN WE WERE TOLD Panky one ODF coukd be removed.. Then a letter stating the teller made and error.. What after many attempts to resolve it we took the Hit on fees and bounce ourselves to another bank.. THese kinda of situations in a small town contribute to failure and should.

I’ve had my account with B of A for 27 years. Last month when I tried to drop off a check to be deposited a lady told me I needed to use the ATM. UMMM no. I’d like some human interaction please. I’ll be finding a local bank and closing all my accounts.

Doesn’t surprise me. They closed their drive up windows and had to deal with their customer service via phone and they were passing us from one person to another.

As long as the on line is good, what is the big deal?

Agree. The only thing I may occasionally miss is the ATM but not really.

No loss.
I was with BoA for years and finally got fed up with their BS.
They are probably closing here because everyone wised up to their crap and switched to a better bank.

“Bank of America is the pariah of the banking world.
It found itself at the bottom of the heap in a J.D. Power survey customers, it was the worst-performing bank on last year’s American Customer Satisfaction Index and the industry publication American Banker recently announced that it has the lousiest reputation among both customers and non-customers of any large lender in the country”

I wonder if their employees get 285.000 next year, 60 sick days at 770.00 a DAY? That’s how it is in the public sector
