Wrestling: Iowa State falls at no. 5 OSU, 38-3

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesSTILLWATER, OK – The No. 16 Iowa State wrestling team (7-5, 1-2 Big 12) wrapped up its January road stint in Stillwater on Sunday. No. 5 Oklahoma State (8-2, 5-0 Big 12) defeated Iowa State 38-3 in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Oklahoma State won nine of the 10 matchups in their 38-3 victory. Senior Earl Hall was the lone winner for the Cyclones, winning his match by 7-6 decision.

At 133-pounds, Hall faced Oklahoma State’s Gary Wayne Harding. Hall jumped out to a quick 6-4 lead over the Cowboy. Harding would strike back though, notching a takedown to tie the match at 6-6. In the third period, Hall chose the down position. With seven seconds on the clock, Hall shook free and got the one-point escape he needed for the 7-6 win.

The Cyclones had a new look at 141-pounds in Stillwater. Redshirt freshman Nathan Boston manned that spot today. He squared off against Oklahoma State’s No. 1 Dean Heil. Boston kept it within striking distance, but was never able to connect. Heil went on to win the match by 5-0 dec.

Redshirt junior Lelund Weatherspoon and redshirt sophomore Dane Pestano also had close bouts in the dual. Weatherspoon was pitted against Oklahoma State’s No. 3 Kyle Crutchmer. In the third period, Weatherspoon fired off several shots that looked promising but wasn’t able to finish. Crutchmer won the match by 5-2 dec.

It was a similar outcome for Pestano at 184-pounds. No. 19 Nolan Boyd held a 4-2 advantage in the third period in the top position. Pestano wasn’t able to get to his feet to get the necessary takedown for the victory. With riding-time, Boyd dec. Pestano, 5-2.

Next Up
After being on the road for the past month and a half, the Cyclones will return home to Hilton Coliseum next week. Iowa State will host Central Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m.
