Steve Bohnel appears to be John Skipper’s replacement. He was a college intern in Pennsylvania until June of 2017 and is about 23 years old. He got hired at the Globe in August – his first real job, it appears. He has quickly now set about trying to make a name for himself by attacking the MCHS logo – springing off the complaints of a snowflake pastor. David Mayberry (another carpetbagger) and company put his trash on the front page of the Globe to try and get a little attention at the expense of our storied school system.
So in other words, this punk from PA – who has quickly found himself pulled over by Iowa law enforcement at least twice and fined both times – is here in town trashing something that matters zilch to him, just to further his “career” – which I’d say has little chance of lasting very long. The Globe has become the new BeJe Clark – bringing in out of town trash to fester for an indeterminate amount of time to do menial jobs and parasite off what little is here. It appears he also made insensitive requests for information from police after the recent, accidental, tragic death of a toddler in Manly. Again, this flaky kid is trying hard to make a name for himself likely just to get a job at a real newspaper back east.

Come on, haven’t you ever heard the phrase, “guns don’t kill, people kill”. I have a gun that I have owned since I was 9 years old, and guess what, it has never killed anyone. The same holds true of the other guns that I have, which are locked in a gun safe. I haven’t taken them out for years, so to be safe, I should never open the safe because I’m sure they, (the guns) have pent up frustrations from being locked up for so long, that they just might kill someone if I let them out. Guns are only a tool, as are baseball bats, knives, swards, and automobiles. They can’t walk, talk, or move about without the help of a human. Are you related to Hitler by any chance.

The “guns don’t kill people” argument is flawed because it sidesteps the debate. The issue is not whether guns can spontaneously kill people on their own. The issue involves how incredibly easy a modern weapon makes killing.

Max weaver called for the rejection of all 5 and to begin the search process over. Will NIT be calling Mayor Brain-dead for an update? I really thought Matt would expose these charlatans and their backgrounds of numerous difficulties in multiple cities and Roder for bankruptcy. Clearly, this list of candidates is not what Mason City needs … we could do better, I think. And if the council is too brain-dead to figure that out, well, that’s on them and the voters who put them in office. Of course, our elected leaders are not always known for making great decisions. If and when they propose to hire one of these guys, we’ll dig deep at that point. Right now, we are hearing about all the games being played in connection to this hire, the secret meetings, Robin Anderson’s talons on the pie, so to speak. As of February 5, enrollment is down -27 students across the district (-2 at preschools, -8 at the elementaries, -4 at John Adams and -13 at High School) since October 1 (count day)
High School had 220 seniors on count day and there are now 207 seniors because of 13 mid-year graduations
With an anticipated 265 kindergartners for next year and 220 seniors (on count day) there will be a natural increase of +45 students in enrollment

Appears that IEDA has set their mid-May meeting as the deadline for Chodur/G8 to prove there is $10M from him / lender for the hotel. Allow them a month up to the IEDA June meeting to verify and accept or probably void this Renaissance approval.

I like and have the utmost of respect for teachers. I always have. What I was trying to imply by using quotation marks around the word “educators” was some are more of an instigator, rather than being an educator. If teachers or educators knowingly subject students to their own personal beliefs and or interpretation of something rather than facts, I feel that is wrong. In my opinion, there is no place in our school systems for partisan politics. I could care less about your political leanings or beliefs, as long you leave them out of the classroom.
As I said before, I keep my political beliefs out of my classroom. If someone in the class asks me what I believe about something political, I would tell them and I would tell them why without disparaging the other side. Do you also believe religious beliefs should be left out of the classroom? Just wondering.

I just took a look at the meeting minutes and yes, you’re right (except, Symmonds’ first name is Will). This is very disappointing as a citizen. I thought these guys wanted to serve the citizens and really be involved (and EARN their pay). I guess I was wrong about that.

Is there some reason that more press is not being given to these City administrator finalists? The mayor seems to believe these are outstanding candidates.
1. O’donnell. Fired from Dixon, IL on a 3-2 vote, but one of the dissenting members voted against paying him any severance or it would have been 4-1. He has also been a finalist in 9 other communities recently. He rubbed council members and staff the wrong way according to news articles. He was fired in less than 18 months.
2. Pederson. Let go with a $225,000 severance in Kentucky. In the last 13 years he has had 3 different positions. He was also let go in Dodge City Kansas after 2 years. Appears to be in late 50’s or early 60’s, so probably more interested in retirement and perhaps a 3rd severance to set him up.
3. Roder. Has declared personal bankruptcy and has taken both Northfield and Norfolk for severance packages. Only been in Independence for a short time and has been finalist in other communities. Was recently passed over in Spencer. He also reportedly had problems in Denison.
4. Guy that just got let go in Florida was also asked to leave Ottumwa after what the newspaper described as a tumultuous relationship with Council and media. So, he has been let go from his last 2 jobs.
5. Lansing. Simply would be in way over his head.
Come on Mason City and NIT. Let’s not let this happen. The rest of the media has not stepped up in the public interest and called attention to the fact that these are people who have been discarded by other communities and our Mayor calls them outstanding. Really have to question his thinking.
Haven’t done the extensive research quite yet, but if this is true, shame on the search team – time to re-boot and go back to the drawing board before city hall drags this town further in to the dark murky waters we’re already wading into thanks to Robin, Eric, Bill, and the other incompetents in town.

Do you know how many downtown property owners are very wealthy out-of-towners who’ve never lived in Mason City, hit up the city for the same kind of assistance that Matt got, and receive it, over and over? These parasites could easily pay for their building upgrades themselves, but they want us to pay for their remodeling. At least Matt lives here, and pays taxes here, so he’s just asking for his own money back. Look up downtown property ownership on the county’s website, it’s a real education.
Millionaires in town are also taking that “free” money … but they didn’t turn a building (church) that generated ZERO tax dollars for decades into a building that will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes over the coming years. Otherwise, I don’t think he’d be a professional at anything – least of all evaluating talent. Is anyone on the council fit for that, either? Maybe Mr. Adams and Mr. Masson, they are the top of that class. The rest, well, they shouldn’t quit their day jobs, if they have one.
From what I’m told, the CA search has gone real bad and city hall needs to go back to the drawing board until some real quality applicants surface. Pair this mayor and council with a shoddy CA and you have a disaster waiting to happen.

Their excuse is they can’t get employees in this area. They have low pay and no benefits because they hire only part time. They have been known for a long time as one of the worse employers in town.

You are correct. Delivery is a tough job in all kinds of weather with little or no support from the paper. They don’t pay crap for what they have to do.
