I just read today that a national poll says only 1% of the American people think gun violence and gun control is a major issue. Obama may have just cost the Democrats the election by going around congress and the constitution.
It’s game on. Most of those mass shootings were committed by people with no records to speak of. And as far as the mental illness thing goes…now he’s causing people to avoid getting help, so he’s creating more of a problem, not less. I think ur right. Loyal Americans to the 2nd Amendment will come out in droves to support Trump. Hillary’s ship is sunk. She wholeheartedly endorsed his position.

I agree. Just on the stories Matt has informed us about it seems like something is array in the law enforcement and justice system in this town. Since the ‘state’ pays all their pay checks,how can it possible be fair,they work for the same boss.. One judge in North Iowa used to work for the county attorney’s office, how can they be bi-partisan? I thought the first death in the jail was odd, but two now? We need to hold someone accountable or will it take more deaths to do so? I do understand that these inmates could be dying on their own accord and practices, but still, who’s watching who? It’s no wonder many innocent people get charged and convicted if the system is not following the order of law as written. Judges seem to think they can rewrite the laws specially if no trial by jury is present.Reasonable doubt became reasonable guilty…sad

I find most people are ignorant of the truth. Truth being that the local justice system is illegitimate and subverts the law of the land (constution/ supreme court case law). So all those who are arrested for victimless crimes are just citizens being kidnapped and then extorted from for thier freedom. Example you have an inalienable right to travel un molested in a personal conveyance with a guest you are not afforded the privilege to operate a comercial vehicle conduction of commerce. Dont worry i am staying on point and that point being this towns legal system is corupt. The courts are not true courts as set up by the constution but are are admiralty/ millitary tribunal courts and absent contract have no jurdiction. So when i envoked my constutional right to challange the jurisdiction of the court in an 18 page notorized motion to dismiss in apa format with jump citations for a non jailable offence. The judge threatened to hold me for bond. THE CONVERSION OF THE ENVOKING OF A CONSTUTIONAL INTO A CRIME IS CALLED WAGING WAR AGAINST THE LAW OF THE LAND OR TREASON. So all in all the judge/administrator violated mine and everyone elses constutional rights in five areas. All i was looking at was a 200 fine for doing something i have right to do travel to my job to provide for my family. Anytime you punish people according to the preferences of others and not the law we are all stolen from. So let us illuminate the mases instead of turning out the lights, so speak truth out of love people.

Well, it is too bad that they Hawkeyes got beat as bad as they did in the Rose Bowl. And yes, coaching may have had something to do with it too. But….where were all the critics and arm-chair quarterbacks when they were going undefeated? I never heard a bad thing abut them until Michigan State beat them. I guess everyone loves a winner.
1959 and 1957 were the only times the Hawkeyes won the Rose Bowl. They’ve choked on every other occasion. It’s a curse of sorts.

Too often editors hold back on the most interesting, yet “sticky” areas of crime and cushion opinions about political subjects. Many hometown newspapers as ignore obvious issues in our community, in order to “soften” the “not so charming” realities that go on in every little city. North Iowa Today delivers the news with a sort of fun, sometimes humorously rude and often ridiculously in-depth manner. This is an absolute inspiration, as far as finally seeing, in print, the news we know is happening, but is so often hid under ” kinder, gentler” words. NIT does not hesitate to reveal the answers to questions no one wants to ask out loud. This is an additional avenue to keep up with the current affairs in North Iowa.
Each day I log on to the publication with an anticipation, I am satisfied and impressed with the content and the unique, entertaining and informative delivery. Although I frequently disagree with the political opinions, cringe at the harshness of releasing a mockery of some of the crimes perpetrated by young, first time offenders, and I ache at the exposure of addicts who appear to be criminal monsters-many of whom I know personally. I know some of them as struggling friends, or cheated children, soft-hearted, hard working, Christians, and brilliantly, funny alcoholics. I recognize untreated mentally impaired young adults, and a few elderly “legends” and I feel my heart tug. These “criminals” have a heart and emotions-they have parents or grandparents, a spouse or children who hurt when they hurt. Nevertheless, I appreciate the journalism, the informative, factual, although disturbing, disheartening, pubic records. I believe in the deeper, in depth info NIT provides. I understand and respect the curiousness of readers and respect their right to be informed. I also admire the “so human” style in which the news is relayed. I do get an odd thrill in the brave, crazy journalism Mr. Marquardt encourages as he accepts the “forbidden”… comments by “anonymous” and the raw, openness of the “Whiners Den” contributors.
I’ll begrudgingly admit, as a wayward,yet respectful, and sometimes criminally inclined, “live by the Golden Rule”, left leaning citizen, that I have immensely enjoyed your publication. Initially, I was disturbed at the harshness and pretty unfair exposure of some of the businesses owned by hard working life-long employers in Mason City. I was silly struck, interested, hungry, humored and intrigued by the in-depth crime reports. The first time I ran into your publication I was humored by the reference of the North End being the “Cultural..” and I went berserk with a somewhat, surprised, yet open mind about your oddly, almost irresponsible article about Hillary “sneaking” into Mason. At first I was irritated”ly”entertained, alarmed. However, it took me less than a few thoughts to realize how much I anticipated the next publication. Thank you and May

Not all sport figures can be classified as heroes. But I think ones who persevered through a physical injury or crisis and lives a functional productive life and came out a winner or even persevered is imo a hero. But just winning games and being a sports star doesn’t make one a hero.
An icon is a person known by many who has been admired for goodness they’ve brought to others lives is imo an icon.

I feel one of the best things to happen was Peter Lagios being banned from NIT.
The only thing that could be better is if Lagios was committed to a mental institution for the rest of his pathetic life.

Now that you can see all these idiots running their sump pump hoses to the street and causing such a mess the city could fine them.
Agreed. It creates a mess and perhaps a safety hazard but I dont think its illegal. Pumping into the sanitary sewer system is a different story. Better they should just pump their water into their own yard.
I agree our Council should make a stand for the entire communities safety and enact an ordinance. If you have a sump pump its YOUR responsibilities NOT the cities to make sure it can away without causing a safety hazard in the street or in front of someone else’s property. But I bet they won’t act because too many people would bitch and moan.

So whats your solution just let people create a safety hazard for everyone. This is when the government should step in to protect the majority even if it will cause a hardship for those of you who have sump pumps. People with sump pumps should have to pay out of their own pockets to get this water away. Where do they think they have a right to pump this water into the streets and create a risk down the block from their house.
I am pretty sure they already have a ordinance against running the sump pump water in the street. They put it in several years ago. They can run the pumps into their grass, but not the streets. Like a lot of ordinances it is not enforced unless someone complains..
Down by hoover is terrible. I’d rather they run it into the floor drain than into the street.
That area of town is under water half the year. Its more complicated than a sump pump issue, they live in the swap.
One house on Fillmore between 9th and 10th, West side of the block, is not the whole neighborhood. Guy probably has a broken water line and is too inbred to know about it.
Another real bad one on the corner of 9th and Pierce. They have been running water into the street for years. They were fined once but went right back to it. Almost all houses in the area have to run sump pumps or have their lower levels under water.
924 N Fillmore sump pumps out through the curb into the gutter, was running today when I drove by.
They are around like this, some spill right onto the sidewalk. Very icy, very dangerous, they should be turned in immediately.
They could put in a sub drain and divert it into a storm sewer. But a lot of people with sump pumps would want the government to pay for this for them. I think anyone with a sump pump who is creating a safety hazard for the public should be responsible to clean it up all the way down the street. They caused the mess they can clean it up themselves.
