Investigation underway after cops fire at eluding vehicle

investigateFAIRFIELD, IA – State officials are investigating after police fire their weapons at a vehicle that refused to stop.

On June 2, 2015, at approximately 1 M, Fairfield, Iowa police officers attempted to stop a vehicle near the intersection of 12th Street and Jefferson Avenue, in Fairfield. The vehicle refused to stop and continued to elude law enforcement. The vehicle was eventually stopped approximately 2 miles south of Birmingham in Van Buren County. Officers with the Fairfield Police Department discharged their weapons during the incident. The driver of the vehicle was subsequently taken into custody. No one was injured during this incident.

This matter is still under investigation and further information will be released upon the conclusion of that investigation. The names of the officers and suspect are not being released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

The Fairfield Police Department would like to thank the Jefferson County Sherriff’s Office and Reserves, the Van Buren County Sherriff’s Office and Reserves, the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa State Patrol (ISP) and the DPS’ Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, and the Van Buren County Attorney’s Office.
