MASON CITY – It may have been a frightening experience for Mason City’s mayor as he called police to report a man was rummaging inside a house next to his Monday night.

Police were summoned to the 500 block of East State Street Monday at about 8:10 PM. Mayor Eric Bookmeyer had called police, who promptly arrived on the scene and began chasing a male subject on foot through the snow and wind inside the Cultural Crescent.

Officers pursued the man, described as Caucasian and wearing tan pants and a black coat. It was reported that he had been inside 511 East State Street, right next door to the house owned by Bookmeyer and Erin Peterson.

The chase went west toward Mohawk Square and involved a number of police officers. The man refused to stop at first but police reported that he began to slow down and tire as they closed in on him.

“He’s still running but he’s slowing down!” a police officer said as they neared the hospice and Mason City library area.

Minutes later, police were near the Delaware Avenue bridge when they finally subdued the culprit.

“We got this guy, he’s a burglar!” the cops said after they caught him behind the Curves building on Delaware. The subject was identified as 30-year-old Daniel Alexander Dozier.

Police then set about trying to preserve tracks in the snow and were investigating the house where the man was inside of for tracks and evidence. They brought a camera out to take pictures of his tracks, and placed blankets over them so the wind would not erode them.

It was not known exactly what Dozier was seeking.  He was charged with burglary in the third degree and held on $5,000 bond.

Good job, Eric Bookmeyer, for keeping an eye out for your neighbors.

this is why our town has become a target for thieves, druggies and abusers. our judges and county attorney always lets these guys out with a slap of the hands.

This is a problem all over the state. I have a relative who is a Cass County sheriff and he says his biggest frustration is arresting the same people over and over. He says the judges and county attorney in Cass County are way too lenient on the criminals. The judges let them go with a slap on the wrist and the county attorney is too easy on plea deals.

This makes me nervous! This guy will break into your house even if your there that’s how bold he is. I remember him from the break ins he was committing before he went to prison. Now he’s out. YIKES!

BTW’ GOOD JOB Officer Klemas.

With any luck the next house he breaks into will be a judges house. Then maybe they will quit letting these criminals back on our streets.

OMG he’s out of prison??? WHY?? This guy is DANGEROUS! I bet he could be the person who’s committing these burglaries. One of my friends was delivering papers one morning about 3-4 yrs (or so) ago and while she went to deliver a paper he stole her purse. It could of been worse. He’s very bold. The courts would be protecting a lot of residents if they keep him behind bars this time!

Good job, MCPD!
