NIACC sports update

MASON CITY – The following NIACC sports update was released by the NIACC Athletic Department this week.

VOLLEYBALL

What’s next: The NIACC volleyball team (2-4 overall) hosts Southwestern Community College (1-5 overall, 0-1 in ICCAC) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in its home opener. Match time is 7 p.m. in the NIACC gym.
Last time out: NIACC dropped a pair of matches in Norfolk, Neb., on Friday. Northeast Community College topped NIACC 25-17, 25-20, 25-10 and Central CC (Neb.) stopped the Lady Trojans 25-16, 25-6, 25-13.

What’s next: The NIACC men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action Sept. 13. The NIACC men run at the Grinnell College Les Duke Invitational 8-kilometer race and the NIACC women run at the Luther College All-American Invitational 5K race.
Last time out: The NIACC men placed third and the NIACC women were fifth at the Mount Mercy Mustang Gallop last Friday.
Freshman Trey Simons led the NIACC men with a third-place finish in a school-record 5-kilometer time of 15 minutes, 31 seconds. Sophomore Jaime Zarate placed fourth for the Trojans in a time of 15:34, which also broke the old school mark of 16:01 by Trent Smith in 2012.
Sophomore Hannah Palmeter led the NIACC women with a second-place finish in a 4K school-record time of 14:43. Freshman Alyssa Cowan placed ninth in 15:38, which ranks third on the school’s all-time 4K list.
Did you know? That Anna Buenneke holds NIACC’s record in the 5K (18:15), 6K (22:27) and half-marathon (1:25.15).

SOCCER
What’s next: The NIACC men’s soccer team faces top-ranked Iowa Western (2-0 overall) Sept. 10 in Council Bluffs. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
Last time out: NIACC (1-2 overall) split a pair of matches last weekend. The Trojans dropped a 3-1 decision to Oakton Community College on Sunday and topped the Wartburg College junior varsity 3-1 on Monday.
Leading the way: Freshman Kevin Fortes has scored all five of NIACC’s goals this season, including a hat trick in Monday’s win over the Wartburg junior varsity.
