Janaury 18, 2014 photo from Matt Kitner, shot near Dodger’s Point on Clear Lake, not far from the shore. There is a vehicle hooked to the front of the shack, Mr. Kitner stated.

VENTURA – The ice may not be as safe as you think.

Every winter, authorities pull vehicles – and sometimes the occupants – out of frozen waters after they collapse through what looked like solid ice.

As the accompanying photo shows, accidents happen, and it is better to play it safe when venturing out onto frozen bodies of water. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources  issues warnings nearly every winter, saying there is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice.

The DNR recommends a minimum of four inches of quality ice for fishing and at least five inches for snowmobiles and ATVs.

  1. People continue to blow me away with there stupidity. I ride snowmobiles around the lake on occasion and have noticed specially this year the abundance of open water or slushy conditions near shore. not just around the aerator. Amazingly, I continue to see people driving around in there 7,000 lb 3500 Duramax pickup like its no big deal. I am surprised this doesn’t happen more often.

      1. Probably will be Philly, and you can buy it really cheap, it is real clean! It will help you to move, it has a hitch on it, we just need to find you a trailer.
