Culprit dead, 2 officers injured in western Iowa chase Wednesday

logo-iowa-state-patrolAVOCA, IOWA – A western Iowa man fleeing police was killed and two officers were injured Wednesday in Shelby county.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, 52-year-old Bruce Coenen was driving a 2003 Pontiac Bonneville southbound on Highway 59 about a mile north of Interstate 80 when he struck a Department of Transportation (DOT) vehicle. The DOT vehicle was assisting a Harlan, Iowa police vehicle that was pursuing Coenen.

Two Iowa DOT officers – 58-year-old Kent Leibe and 40-year-old Brian Rick – were injured in the collision and taken to area hospitals with undisclosed injuries.

Coenen was pronounced dead at the scene.

  1. Deadly force is that force which a person uses with the purpose of causing death, or serious bodily harm. It’s use is justified only under conditions of extreme necessity as a last resort, when all lesser means have failed, and cannot reasonably be employed.

    You are right there Ghost, I think they are not following the above order, which is what the military uses in guard situations.
