In no particular order, did you know that….
- male inmates have an incarceration rate 14 times higher than females,
- thirty six percent of females were incarcerated for violent crimes,
- nearly 1 in 5 nonviolent offenders leaving state prison had been convicted of drug trafficking,
- at year end 2011, 39% of sentenced state and federal prisoners were age 40 or older,
- one in every 50 adults in the U.S. was supervised in the community on probation or parole at year end 2011,
- one in every 107 adults was incarcerated in prison or jail at year end 2011,
- about 24% of state prisoners had a recent history of a mental health problem, followed by 21% of jail inmates,
- in 2004, 10% of state prisoners reported prior service in the U.S. Armed Forces, down from 12% in 1997 and 20% in 1986,
- in 2007, Latinos accounted for 40% of all sentenced Federal offenders — more than triple their share (13%) of the total U.S. Adult population.
