FORT MADISON – The Iowa State Penitentiary was placed on restricted movement this morning following fights and assaults involving eight offenders, according to Fred Scaletta, Department of Corrections.
Scaletta indicated Monday that a member of the Corrections Emergency Response Team, (CERT) received a puncture wound to the right hand while attempting to intervene. The assaulted CERT member received treatment at Fort Madison Community Hospital.
The fights and assaults occurred during a program designed to prepare offenders for their eventual release to general population from segregation status.
The incident remains under investigation therefore additional information is not available at this time.
