MASON CITY – Fourth of July afternoon, while most people were picnicking, swimming, enjoying the carnival or doing some other fun summer activity, James Graham of Mason City was doing his best to nurse a young pigeon back to health.
James’ Mom, Belinda, had found the bird in her front yard and called for her son. When James got to the bird, he gently picked it up and set it on his arm. This is where the bird decided to stay. It looked like it felt secure on James’ arm.
“It tried to fly a little bit, but the wings were a little off kilter,” said James. “I can’t really leave it alone right now.”
James was very compassionate and concerned for the confused and scared pigeon.
“I’m trying to figure out ways to help it,” said James. “We need to find something to feed it, probably some bird seed.”
There didn’t seem to be anything more wrong with the bird other than it couldn’t fly away.
Belinda and James then took the young pigeon into their home. A temporary safe haven for the lucky little bird that found a friend.

Call the DNR. There are licensed animal rehab people who can care for this bird properly.
Can somebody rehab Katie?
Just a thought. While this might seem like a good thing to do, it could cause more harm than good. Evidently this bird is/was sick, because even with a broken wing, pigeons will try and escape humans, while this one did not. Pigeons are known to carry several diseases that humans can catch. Sometimes it’s best to let nature take care of it’s own. Just a thought.
Good on you, James!
Nice to read a story about someone doing a good deed for a change. Good job, young man! Thanks for sharing this, Matt
