WASHINGTON – President Obama spoke at Georgetown University Tuesday and explained his vision for the steps the country needs to take to prepare for the impacts of climate change and lead the global effort to fight it.
Obama said he believes the U.S has “a moral obligation to lead the fight against carbon pollution.”
The White House claims that 2012 was the second most extreme year in history due to climate change. It cited extreme heat and drought, wildfires and extreme precipitation and “superstorms” such as Hurricane Sanday that devastated the North East part of the country.
In introducing a series of executive actions to reduce carbon emissions, Obama also said that climate change and disasters cost the U.S. economy $100 billion in 2012.
“We can choose to believe that superstorm Sandy, and the most severe drought in decades, and the most wildfires some states have ever seen were all just a freak coincidence,” Obama said. “Or we can choose to believe in the overwhelming judgement of science – and act before it is too late.”
