Clear Lake’s Sheakley commits to NIACC

niacc_trojans_logoMASON CITY — Clear Lake left-handed pitcher Gavin Sheakley has committed to play baseball at NIACC next season.

Sheakley is 6-0 with a 0.85 earned run average for the top-ranked (3A) Lions heading into Tuesday’s nonconference doubleheader at Mason City. The southpaw has 60 strikeouts and 14 walks and opponents are hitting .129 against him.

“I’m just impressed with how he locates both sides of the plate,” NIACC coach Travis Hergert told the Globe Gazette Monday. “As far as left-handed breaking balls go, he has command.”

Sheakley has a career mark of 27-5 with 174 strikeouts and 72 walks in 182 innings pitched. He was 7-3 as a junior, 9-2 as a sophomore and 5-0 as a freshman.

Sheakley will join a recruiting class that consists of catcher Zachary Fricke (Waterloo West), infielder Chad Christensen (Atlantic), first baseman Tom Schreiber (West Branch), infielder/outfielder Daniel Pellinen (North Woods. Wis.), infielder/right-handed pitcher Trent Vondrasek (Trempealeau, Wis.), infielder/right-handed pitcher Ryan Moran (Bridgeport, Conn.), infielder/right-handed pitcher Casey Hall (Newman Catholic) and outfielders Daniel Bradley (Aukland, New Zealand), Aaron Greene (Fargo, N.D.) and David Stevens (Appleton, Wis.)

Also in the recruiting class are right-handed pitchers Brandon Platts (Mason City), Jacob Gleason (Pella), Sawyer Doocy (North Union), Quinn Ahern (Joliet West, Ill.) and Shane Barker (Windsor, Ontario, Canada).

NIACC was 31-18 in 2013 and placed fifth in its initial appearance at the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Okla., in May.
