Today, FBI Science and Technology Branch Executive Assistant Director Steven Martinez briefed a House subcommittee on the evolution of the FBI’s fingerprint identification efforts and new capabilities in the Bureau’s Next Generation Identification program. Some of these capabilities include faster searches and improved search accuracy, a national palm print repository, and mobile access for law enforcement officers through hand-held devices that submit fingerprints of high-interest individuals and match them against prints of wanted criminals, terrorists, and sex offenders. In addition, Martinez discussed ongoing research into the accuracy and potential suitability of other biometrics in the lawful performance of the FBI mission that could also aid our partner agencies.
