Iowa Transportation Commission Approves Safe Routes to School Program Funding

iowadotlogoAMES, Iowa – June 11, 2013 – Today, the Iowa Transportation Commission approved $786,651 in total funding for six Safe Routes to School program projects. The program was created with federal transportation funds in 2005 with the purpose of increasing the number of children safely walking and bicycling to school. Funding is available to cities, counties, state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and public and private schools through an annual application-based program.

The projects, award recipients and approved funding amounts are listed below.

Noninfrastructure

Northeast Iowa Safe Routes to School Program
Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission: $26,664

Noninfrastructure costs for recommended infrastructure projects
Cedar Rapids: $1,000

Infrastructure

Hill Avenue Sidewalk Extension
Spirit Lake: $206,864

North Manning Safe Route to School
Manning: $245,584

Oakland Road Northeast Sidewalk (northwesterly side) Golf Street to Golfview Drive
Cedar Rapids: plus $1,000 for noninfrastructure activities $125,883

Safe Routes K-8 Center Point-Urbana Schools
Center Point: $100,656

U.S. 65/Lincoln Street Pedestrian/Bicycle Underpass
Bondurant: $80,000
