Atlanta dubbed ‘Most Redneck’ city in United States

SAN MATEO, Calif., May 13 (UPI) — A California real estate brokerage firm dubbed Atlanta the “Most Redneck” U.S. city, using criteria such as the number of NASCAR tracks and Walmarts.

Movoto, based in San Mateo, said its criteria also included the number of gun and ammo stores, taxidermists, cowboy boot stores and country radio stations, and the percentage of the population who haven’t completed high school to rank the 10 “Most Redneck” U.S. cities, ABC News reported Monday.

Atlanta was first on the list, followed by Kansas City, Mo.; Oklahoma City; Nashville; Tulsa, Okla.; Fort Worth, Texas; Arlington, Texas; Sacramento; Cleveland; and Mesa, Ariz.

“Add it all up and Atlanta just beat out Kansas City, Mo., for tops on the list,” Movoto spokesman Nick Johnson said. “So, if I were to try and quantify everything, I’d say that Atlanta didn’t stand out too much, but it was right about in the middle, overall, for everything, while other cities were up and down enough that middle of the road won out.”

The Movoto posting has resulted in several angry comments from those who took exception to the “Redneck” label.

“This is a totally useless, elitist article,” a reader named Steve posted on the Movoto blog. “It’s written about on the level of Brian the dog on ‘Family Guy.’ It’s almost impossible to believe that not only is someone getting paid for this, but that it’s published at all.”
