JERUSALEM, April 28 (UPI) — Two Israeli government ministers are considering a bill that would require any peace treaty with the Palestinians to face a national referendum, officials said.
The Hebrew language daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported Sunday that Finance Minister Yair Lapid and Economics and Trade Minister Naftali Bennett are examining the possibility of introducing a bill to mandate a national referendum on any peace treaty with the Palestinians before it faces ratification in Israel’s Knesset.
While Bennett has discussed the issue with members of his Jewish Home (Habayit Hayehudi) party in an effort to garner support for such a bill, Lapid said he would consult with other members of his There is a Future Party (Yesh Atid) before making his decision, the newspaper said.
Bennett opposes a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, while Lapid supports it, the newspaper said.
