No. 1 Sooners Defeat Iowa State

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesNORMAN, Okla. – Senior Erica Miller hit her sixth home run of the season and drove in her 49th run of the season on Friday night as Iowa State (19-27, 4-9 Big 12) fell at No. 1 Oklahoma (41-3, 9-1 Big 12), 24-1, at the OU Softball Complex.

Miller launched a pitch from reliever Leslie Miller over the left field fence in the top of the fourth for Iowa State’s first hit and first run of the evening. Miller finished the night 2-for-2 with a walk. Tori Torrescano, Maddie Reese and Jorden Spendlove also had hits for the Cyclones in the contest.

Leslie Miller (1-0) would go on to take the win for the Sooners, pitching one and one-third innings, allowing two hits and one run while walking none and striking out one.

Junior infielder Sara Davison worked a walk in the Cyclone second inning, becoming the fourth player in program history to walk 60 times in a career. Miller, who walked in the first, is one walk away from joining the 60-walk club, ending the night with 59 career base-on-balls.

As a team, the 2013 Cyclones have walked 147 times, one shy of the single-season record set in 2011.

The Sooners opened up an 11-0 lead in the first inning with six hits, including a grand slam by Shelby Pendley, while taking advantage of four Cyclone errors. The home team added 12 runs in the second as the Cyclones walked in five runs and gave up two home runs.

A final run would score for the Sooners on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning after Miller homered in the top of the frame.

Torrescano (10-12) took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on five hits and four walks while not fanning a batter and getting one out.

The teams will be back on the field for game two of the series on Saturday at noon CDT.
