Girl, 12, brought $20,000 to school

TAYLOR, Mich., March 13 (UPI) — Police in Michigan said a 12-year-old girl who was found to have $20,000 cash in her backpack apparently received the money from another child.

Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said the Sixth Grade Academy student, whose name was not released, was found to have $20,000 cash in her backpack Monday when officials discovered she had been distributing cash to other students, The Detroit News reported Wednesday.

“The 12-year-old apparently got the money from another child who lives across the street from her the night before,” Sclabassi said.

Sclabassi said school administrators “brought in the student, secured the backpack and retrieved the money she had given away. This is a real first for me.”

The chief said the girl’s neighbors have claimed the cash and police are investigating.
