Girls state basketball: Estherville-Lincoln Cental 55, Spirit Lake 39

DES MOINES – Estherville-Lincoln Central’s seniors are still in the running for a chance to play in another state championship game.

Twins Casey and Allie Sievert combined for 31 points as the third-ranked Midgettes completed a three-game sweep of No. 9 Spirit Lake with a 55-39 victory to conclude the Class 3A quarterfinals.

Casey Sievert led the way with 18 points and Allie, the school’s career scoring leader, added 13. Sara Heywood contributed 12 points, while Emily Kirchner had six points and nine rebounds.

All five Estherville-Lincoln Central starters are seniors and played when the Midgettes lost to OA-BCIG in the 2011 Class 2A championship game. They’ll meet No. 2 MOC-Floyd Valley in a semifinal game at 5 p.m. Thursday and will try to avenge a 42-33 regular-season loss to the Lady Dutch.

Alissa Christoffer led Spirit Lake with 16 points, while KJ Veldman had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Estherville-Lincoln Central beat Lakes Conference rival Spirit Lake by margins of 34 and 15 points during the regular season and led all the way in this one.

Ahead 29-20 at halftime, Estherville-Lincoln Central started the third quarter with a 14-3 run to put it out of reach. The Sievert sisters each scored five points in that burst and Heywood hit a pair of jumpers.

The lead was never below 13 after that.
